One part concentrate to the ratio on the pack, or if you are making your own: one part white granulated sugar to four parts water.
No boiling required. Warm tap water dissolves it fine.
Never use honey — it ferments and promotes a fungal infection that is fatal to hummingbirds. Avoid brown sugar, raw sugar and molasses, which contain iron they cannot process. Artificial sweeteners provide no calories at all.

Every four to five days in cool weather. Every two days around 80°F. Daily above 90°F.
Sugar water ferments and grows mould, and both are dangerous. If it looks cloudy, empty it, wash the feeder and start again.
Fill less than you think you need. A third-full feeder changed constantly beats a full one you feel obliged to use up.

Suet matters most in cold weather, when birds burn through calories overnight and natural food is scarce. It is what brings in woodpeckers, nuthatches and wrens that largely ignore seed.

Dye-free
The feeder is red. The nectar does not need to be.
Hummingbirds are drawn to the colour red, which is why feeders are made red — the plastic does the job. There is no nutritional case for dye, and red dye is not proven safe at the volumes these birds consume.
A hummingbird drinks roughly its own body weight in nectar every day. There is no upside to adding something whose only purpose is to look appealing to the person filling the feeder.

Cheap suet softens and drips in summer heat, fouls feathers and goes rancid. A no-melt formula holds its shape, which means you can feed suet all year rather than only in winter.
